COMRA Purchases New Vessel

New COMRA SAR Vessel

The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary unit Comra Marine Rescue Association is a dedicated Marine Search and Rescue team covering the waters of Lake Ontario in the Durham Region. The Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary is a major player in Canada's national search and rescue (SAR) response network. Annually, the Auxiliary responds to approximately 25% of nearly 7000 marine SAR incidents. This translates into more than 200 lives saved each year. In 2007 to further enhance our capabilities to perform Search and Rescue in the Durham Region, Comra Marine Rescue Association replaced our 1961 Bertram with the purchase of Peel Regional Police’s 1993 Rescue boat, thanks to a $30,600 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) and internal fundraising efforts. This grant was an investment in our community’s water safety and to our volunteers who risk their lives to save others.

Comra is entering its 39th year of Marine Search and Rescue in the Durham Region. We are looking forward to the 2008 season. Our on water service is from May to October 24 hours a day 7 days a week, Comra members are dedicated to saving and protecting lives in distress. In addition to their everyday jobs, auxiliarists are ready to exchange leisure, comfort and sleep for cold, wet and fatigue in a range of situations that will test their skills, strength and nerve.
